為何中國人會被認為是 Goons and Thugs？

昨天同事提到MSN名單裡，中國那裡的同事都掛起紅心國旗，表達對CNN說中國人是「暴民」一事的不滿。
由於有陣子沒有每天在看新聞，我於是翻了新聞瞭解一下脈絡。我先看到聯合報的說法是「呆子和暴徒」。
但基本上我不太相信這種說法，中國雖然是敵人，但說「呆」也太誇張了；還有為何是暴民呢？
我想或許是翻譯問題吧。
查了一下原文：
According to a transcript posted on the CNN website, the famously curmudgeonly Cafferty said: “We continue to import their junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food and export, you know, jobs to places where you can pay workers a dollar a month to turn out the stuff that we’re buying from Wal-Mart.
“So I think our relationship with China has certainly changed,” he continued. “I think they’re basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they’ve been for the last 50 years.”
CNN這位仁兄 Jack Cafferty 認為，美國不斷進口中國的爛貨，比如塗料含鉛、有毒玩具、用超低廉工資來生產產品進口至Wal-Mart云云，從這方面來看，他認為中美關係跟以往是大為不同了。
但從Youtube影片來看，他又順口說了一句，「基本上他們還是過去50年不變的 goons and thugs」。
然後主持人聽了就大笑了出來。
在我的理解，thugs就是流氓那一類的，goons 我就不知道了。英文字典的解釋是：
A thug hired to intimidate or harm opponents.
A stupid or oafish person.
我可理解聯合報為何解釋為呆子，因為的確是有這意思。但這種說法跟上下語意是連不起來，也不合乎評論者的邏輯。
從這個英文解釋，我認為「goons and thugs」基本上應該是同一類型的人，就是喜歡去「壓榨、傷害」對手的人。
為了釐清這兩個字的差異，我詢問了一下外國網友，有個回答得很不錯。
The distinction in my mind is that the goon is stupidly brutal and does what the boss tells him, while the thug is willfully violent. But the distinction isn't important in this expression. Taken together, they're both gangsters. The two words are synonyms being used together for
amplification.
用白話一點來說，「goons」很像暴力討債集團請來的打手，體型壯碩，人家請你去打架，你就跟著打，沒什麼大腦。你不見得是很暴力的人，但你就是會聽命行事。
「thugs」則是本身就是暴力一型的，凡是喜歡暴力解決。
這麼一解說，或許你很快可聯想到最近的西藏事件，或者法輪功，或者天安門，或者其他各種零星的，只要政府不滿你的言論，隨時可以下令把YouTube關閉，隨時可把記者抓起來關，隨時可恐嚇你如何如何。
你可說 goons and thugs 給人的印象就是暴力流氓，不爽就隨時要掄起拳頭或拿出扁鑽，甚至亮出槍枝來逼迫你就犯，你得小心伺候對方，不要說話得罪對方，不然就是「討皮癢」了。
我並不覺得用「goons and thugs」來形容中國政權本質有何不妥，那的確是中國在我心中的印象。我在MSN名單上的中國同事人人都掛著紅心，我原本在我的MSN寫著「goons and thugs」。
但後來想想，面對這群超愛國且對台灣有潛在暴力傾向的中國人士，還是不要太刺激對方好了。
我於是刪了「goons and thugs」。但我必須說，Cafferty ，謝了，你用的這個字眼，真的紅了。
